Voltaren detailed information:
Voltaren belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which relieves pain and reduces inflammation (swelling). It is used to treat headaches, muscle aches, dental pain, and athletic injuries. It inhibits the biosynthesis and release of prostaglandins, which are known to be implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammation, pain and fever. It is commonly used to treat the pain, swelling and stiffness associated with arthritis. This medication may also be used to treat other painful conditions (e.g., dental pain, muscle aches, pain after surgery or after having a baby). However, if you have sudden severe pain and desire quick relief, it may be better to use other pain medications that are faster acting than this medication.
It works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced in response to injury or certain diseases and would otherwise go on to cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Arthritic conditions are one example of this. All the medicines in the NSAID group reduce inflammation caused by the body's own immune system and are effective painkillers.
Take this medication with food, milk, or antacids to prevent stomach upset. Take it with 180-240ml of water. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug. These tablets contain a special coating and should be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew tablets.
