General information on testosterone enethate
Testosterone enanthate is a prescription drug belonging to the class of anabolic steroids. The drug is used for increasing the levels of testosterone hormone in males. It is also used for treating breast cancer in women in certain cases. Testosterone is responsible for development of sexual organs in males as well as other secondary features such as facial hair etc. When the drug is injected in the body in the form of oil coated medication, the body absorbs testosterone slowly into the blood, thus increasing the testosterone levels in the body.
Precautions/side effects of testosterone enanthate
Patients allergic to ingredients of testosterone enanthate should refrain from using this drug. An allergic reaction to the drug can cause rashes of the skin, wheezing and in severe cases can result in breathlessness. Patients with prostate cancer, heart disease, sleeping disorder, low sperm count or liver or kidney disease should take this drug only after consulting a doctor.
Testosterone enanthate is also known to react with certain medications such as corticosteroids like cortisone, prednisone etc., anti-coagulants like warfarin, insulin and cyclosporine. Patients on any of these drugs should consult a doctor before taking testosterone enanthate.
The drug is a category X pregnancy drug. Thus, it can lead to potentially fatal effects on the fetus as well as the newborn. Hence, pregnant women as well as women who are breastfeeding should refrain from using this drug.
Testosterone enanthate is also known to have certain side effects such as headache, acne, unusual facial growth or breast development in men. However, in certain cases, serious side effects may show up to the drug such as irregular heartbeats, change in the color of the skin, jaundice, clotting disorder etc. If any of these symptoms show up after taking the drug, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
Important safety information
- Women may show signs of virilization after use of this drug such hoarseness of the voice or prominent facial hair. The use of the drug should be immediately upon the appearance of symptoms of virilization to prevent irreversible damage.
- It is important to go for regular blood tests while using this drug to monitor the functioning of liver and other vital organs of the body.
- Testosterone enanthate is known to lower the sperm count. Hence, patients trying to conceive should refrain from using this drug.
- It should be used cautiously in patients above the age of 65 years as geriatric patients are known to be extra sensitive to the drug.
- Testosterone enanthate is not for use in patients below the age of 18 years.
Dosage of testosterone enanthate
Testosterone enanthate is available in 200mg/ml vials. The usual dosage of the drug is 50 mg to 400 mg once every three to four weeks. However, the actual dosage depends on the diagnosis of the patient.
The drug is to be injected intramuscularly and is not meant for intravenous use. It should not be taken orally either. Oral use of the drug renders the drug ineffective as the testosterone gets neutralized by the liver as the drug passes through it before passing into the blood stream, hence having little effect on testosterone levels in the body.
Overdose of the drug should be avoided at all costs. Overdose of the drug can lead to serious symptoms such as seizures, extreme rashes on the skin, prolonged erection etc. which require immediate medical attention.
Storage of testosterone enanthate
Testosterone enanthate should be stored in a cool, dry place at room temperature. It should be stored out of reach of children at all times. If crystals form in the vial, warmth of the hands results in dissolution of the crystals.
