Famvir (famciclovir)
General information on Famvir
Famvir is a prescription medicine with active ingredient famciclovir. The drug is used for treating genital herpes, cold sores and shingles. Patients having sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have a weak immune system because of the presence of a virus. The virus does not ever leave the system. The drug works by preventing the virus from multiplying in the body, thus preserving the strength of the immune system and preventing the disease from spreading.
Precautions/side effects of Famvir
Famvir contains the active ingredient famciclovir. Patients allergic to famciclovir should refrain from using this drug. Other than that, patients with kidney disease, lactase deficiency or galactose malabsorption or intolerance should take this drug only after consultation with a doctor.
The drug is known to react with certain medications such as digitoxin, probenecid, alimta etc. Patients on other prescription medicines should take Famvir only after consultation with a doctor. Famvir is a Category B pregnancy drug. It may or may not have adverse effects on the fetus as well as the newborn. Thus, pregnant women as well as women who are breastfeeding should take this drug only after consultation with a doctor.
The drug is also known to have certain side effects such as diarrhea, mild rashes on the skin, nausea or pain in the abdomen. However, in certain cases, serious side effects may show up to the drug such as hives, breathlessness or inflammation of the tongue, throat or lips. If any of these symptoms show up after taking the drug, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
Important safety information
- The drug does not prevent the spread of herpes virus. It is important o use condoms or other forms of barrier contraceptives to prevent the spread of the disease.
- STDs are contagious. Thus, infected areas should be kept protected at all times to avoid spread of the disease.
- The drug may lead to disappearance of symptoms after a while. However, the entire course of the drug needs to be completed.
Dosage of Famvir
Famvir is available as 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg tablets. The usual dose of the drug for treating herpes is 500 mg trice daily separated by 8 hours for a week. The usual dosage for treating herpes in HIV infected patients is 500 mg twice daily for a week. However, the dose may be adjusted according to the response of the patient.
The drug can be taken with or without food. The drug should be taken with a lot of water as it is known to have an adverse effect on the kidneys. Overdose of the drug should be avoided at all costs. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible. However, it should not be clubbed with the next dose. Overdose of the drug can lead to severe symptoms such as hives, breathlessness etc. which require immediate medical attention.
Storage of Famvir
Famvir should be stored at room temperature in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. It should be stored away from reach of children as well as pets at all times.
