Vespar - Bespar (buspirone) side effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.

Common side effects of buspirone include, but are not limited to:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Headaches.

Buspirone Sexual Side Effects

When you take an anxiety medication like Buspirone, sexual side effects may occur. Some of these sexual problems may include delayed ejaculation, changes in sex drive, and impotence. If you develop any Buspirone sexual side effects, let your healthcare provider know so that he or she can recommend treatment options, adjust your Buspirone dosage, or prescribe another drug to treat anxiety.

Buspirone and Weight Gain

It is estimated that weight gain occurs in less than 1 percent of people taking Buspirone. However, weight loss has also been reported. If you are taking this drug and weight gain occurs, talk to your healthcare provider so that he or she can recommend certain lifestyle changes or switch you to another anxiety medication.

Buspirone and Hair Loss

Hair loss is a possible but uncommon complaint in people taking Buspirone. In clinical studies, hair loss was reported in between 1 in 100 and 1 in 1,000 people who took the drug. Given how common hair loss is in the general population, however, it is difficult to say whether any particular case of hair loss is caused by Buspirone, genetics, other factors, or a combination of these things.

If you experience bothersome hair loss while taking Buspirone, talk to your healthcare provider. Depending on how severe the hair loss is, there are things that he or she may be able to do. If your symptoms continue to be bothersome, or if your healthcare provider believes the medicine is causing your hair loss, he or she may recommend trying another anxiety medication.

Buspirone Overdose

If you take too much Buspirone, overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Life-threatening symptoms may occur if alcohol or other medications are combined with excessive amounts of BuSpar. Overdose treatment options can include taking certain medicines, "pumping the stomach," or receiving supportive care (which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose).
