Using Prozac will help relieve certain forms of anxiety, including obsessive compulsive disorder and panic attack but generally Prozac is prescribed for depression. Prozac works by evening out the natural occurrence of chemicals that contribute to a general feeling of well-being or happiness. Depression is often a result when these chemicals are out of balance or have low levels. Only certain anxiety disorders have Prozac as a prescription such as obsessive compulsive disorder and panic attacks, and it has been shown to be effective with many patients. It will usually take about a month to two months for your body to benefit from Prozac no matter what you are trying to treat with it. It can be hard to wait that long, but if you take Prozac continuously at the same time every day without fail then you will usually notice significant results after several weeks. Prozac is usually only used for those who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD. When the mind lingers over certain ideas or thoughts that would be a fleeting thought for most people obsessive compulsive disorder occurs. This can include an obsession that stems from an obsession with germs into an obsession with cleanliness and washing your hands constantly thinking you will become ill from germs. In this case Prozac is usually used along with behavioral therapy which is designed to change the mental perception of certain ideas. It can take awhile to retrain yourself to think about these every day occurrences as normal and not harmful. Behavioral therapy typically works well for most patients, but if needed your doctor may prescribe Prozac while you are in therapy. |
