Thyroid Hormone Side Effects Are Uncommon

Thyroid Levothyroxine tablets replace the body's natural hormone, so side effects are uncommon. However, if you have angina, you may find that your angina pains become worse when you first start levothyroxine.

Patients who are found to have low thyroid output, a condition known as hypothyroidism, are usually given a T4 drug. Most physicians prefer this less active form of thyroid hormone because the body will convert it to active T3 more slowly. This, in turn, decreases the chance of side effects.

If you take too much levothyroxine it can lead to symptoms and problems of an over active thyroid. For example, palpitations, diarrhoea, irritability, and sweating, and increases the risk of developing osteoporosis. This is why you need blood tests to check that you are taking the correct dose.
