Proviron is oral androgen mesterolone (1 methyl-dihydrotestosterone). Proviron is generally used to treat various types of sexual dysfunction, which often result from a low endogenous testosterone level. It can usually reverse problems of sexual disinterest and impotency, and is sometimes used to increase the sperm count. The drug does not stimulate the body to produce testosterone, but is simply an oral androgen substitute that is used to compensate for a lack of the natural male androgen. Androgens are not suitable for enhancing muscular development in healthy individuals or for increasing physical ability. Proviron is for use in male patients only. Regular examinations of the prostate should be carried out prophylactically. In rare cases, benign and in even rarer cases malignant liver tumours leading in isolated cases to life-threatening intra-abdominal haemorrhage have been observed after the use of hormonal substances, eg. the one contained in Proviron. Proviron is contraindicated in the presence of prostatic carcinoma since androgens can stimulate the growth of an existing carcinoma, previous or existing liver tumours and hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients. Patients with hypercalcemia (high blood levels of calcium) should not take Proviron, and that before taking Proviron, patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, epilepsy or heart disease should consult with a physician to discuss risks and complications to these conditions that Proviron might cause. |
