Testosterone gel (also known as Zandrova gel) contains testosterone. It is used for hormone replacement in men who are not able to produce enough testosterone (e.g., hypogonadism). This medication is absorbed through the skin, enters your bloodstream, and helps your body reach normal testosterone levels. Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor. The usual recommended dose is 5 g (which contains 50 mg testosterone) applied once daily, preferably in the morning after showering or bathing. Some people may need up to 10 g once daily. Apply the gel to a clean, dry area of non-broken skin on the shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen. Do not apply the gel to the genitals. After applying the gel, let it dry for a few minutes, then cover it with clothing and wash your hands to avoid getting the medication on other people's skin. Wait at least 5 to 6 hours before reapplying the gel, showering, or swimming. After applying the gel, allow it to dry completely before smoking or going near an open flame. Dose adjustment and patient assessments To ensure proper dosing, serum testosterone levels should be measured at intervals and replaced to serum testosterone levels in the normal range. If the serum testosterone concentration is below the normal range, the daily Testosterone gel dose may be increased from 5 g to 7.5 g and from 7.5 g to 10 g for adult males as instructed by the physician. If the serum testosterone concentration exceeds the normal range, the daily Testosterone gel dose may be decreased. If the serum testosterone concentration consistently exceeds the normal range at a daily dose of 5 g, Testosterone gel therapy should be discontinued. |
