Ephedrine hydrochloride potential drug interactions

Ephedrine hydrochloride is a central nervous system stimulant used to treat breathing problems (as a bronchodilator), nasal congestion (as a decongestant), low blood pressure problems (orthostatic hypotension), or myasthenia gravis.

Ephedrine should not be used in combination with other stimulant products (e.g., caffeine), other cough-and-cold products, or as a dietary supplement for the purpose of weight loss or body building. Doing so may increase your risk of unlikely but potentially fatal side effects including: stroke, heart attack, seizures, or severe mental disorders.

This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine, rasagiline). Avoid taking MAO inhibitors within 2 weeks before, during, and after treatment with guaifenesin/ephedrine. In some cases a serious, possibly fatal drug interaction may occur.

If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. When Ephedrine is combined with any of the drugs listed, potentially negative interactions will occur:

* Seizure medications: Do not take Ephedrine if you take any seizure medications. Ephedrine can make seizure medications less effective.
* Theophylline (Uniphyl, Theocron, TheoCap, Theo-24, Elixophyllin): Do not use Ephedrine with theophylline. Combining Ephedrine with theophylline could lead to serious side effects.
* QT-Prolonging medications Combining: Ephedrine with a QT-prolonging medication could increase the risk of QT prolongation, a very dangerous irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia).
* Any other stimulants: Ephedrine contains ephedrine and other stimulants, which can be dangerous when taken with other stimulants. Do not combine Ephedrine with any other stimulant.
* Diabetes medications: Do not take Ephedrine with a diabetes medication. Ephedrine may increase your blood sugar, which can make diabetes medications less effective.
* Decongestants: Taking them together may increase the risk of side effects. Do not take Ephedrine with a decongestant. Some of the stimulants and many nasal decongestants are chemically related.
