Ephedrine hydrochloride is a central nervous system stimulant used to treat breathing problems (as a bronchodilator), nasal congestion (as a decongestant), low blood pressure problems (orthostatic hypotension), or myasthenia gravis. Ephedrine should not be used in combination with other stimulant products (e.g., caffeine), other cough-and-cold products, or as a dietary supplement for the purpose of weight loss or body building. Doing so may increase your risk of unlikely but potentially fatal side effects including: stroke, heart attack, seizures, or severe mental disorders. This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine, rasagiline). Avoid taking MAO inhibitors within 2 weeks before, during, and after treatment with guaifenesin/ephedrine. In some cases a serious, possibly fatal drug interaction may occur. If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. When Ephedrine is combined with any of the drugs listed, potentially negative interactions will occur: * Seizure medications: Do not take Ephedrine if you take any seizure medications. Ephedrine can make seizure medications less effective. |
