Weight Loss the Healthy Way

Weight Loss the Healthy Way

Billions of people all over the world, millions in the US alone, are overweight. Although being overweight is not a disease, it can be a serious health condition and can lead to a number of more serious health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. People who are overweight do not have the same amount of energy as those who are of a healthy weight and therefore are not nearly as active. It is essential that anyone who truly wants to be healthy and be at a comfortable weight to follow a healthy diet and get at least a half an hour of exercise each day.

Fad Diets Don't Work

It is nearly impossible to open a magazine these days and not find the newest, greatest diet ever. Unfortunately, most of these diets are not based on healthy meal plans, and although you may lose a few pounds while on them, once you are back to your normal diet, you will put that weight right back on, and probably a little bit more. The only really healthy weight loss diet is one that is healthy and includes a certain amount of nutrients that we all need. The American Heart Association and the American Diabetes association, as well as many other health organizations, recommend that the average adult follow a diet that consists of 50% good (simple) carbohydrates, 15% good fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) and 35% protein.

In addition to enjoying a healthy, well-balanced diet, we also need to get a certain amount of exercise every day. Now, this doesn't mean that you have to join an expensive gym or start running marathons. Just a half hour walk every day is all the exercise you really need.

Don't Deprive Yourself

One of the biggest problems people have when it comes to sticking to their diets is the fact that they crave treats that are not allowed on their diets. It is not a crime to have a sweet or greasy treat now and again, just as long as you plan for it in your diet, do not go too much over your regular daily caloric intake, and do not skip your exercises. In fact, many people who deprive themselves of treats once in a while tend to go on eating binges and toss their diets altogether. A healthy diet can include the occasional treat, even weekly ones. Remember, weight loss doesn't have to be as much of a challenge as we make it out to be when we do it right.
