Plavix (clopidogrel) with Aspirin reduce stroke risk

Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) has been approved for the reduction of atherosclerotic events (myocardial infaraction, stroke, vascular deaths) in patients with atherosclerosis documented by recent myocardial infarctions, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease.

The use of clopidogrel (Plavix) appears to greatly reduce the risk of clot-induced late restenosis in drug-coated stents. Clopidogrel works by reducing the function of platelets, the tiny cells in the blood that help the blood to clot.

A large new study found that taking aspirin with clot busting drug Plavix (clopidogrel) cut the risk of stroke by 28 per cent in patients with irregular heart rhythms (atrial fibrillation) who were not able to take anticoagulants like warfarin. Involving a total of 7,554 patients, the trial showed that taking Plavix with aspirin led to an 11 per reduction in deaths and cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks, compared with aspirin alone.
