Gastro health medicine Nexium contraindications and overdose

Nexium - esomeprazole magnesium works by blocking acid production in the stomach. Nexium is a medicine known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Nexium is used to treat acid-related stomach and throat (esophagus) problems, such as erosive esophagitis or acid reflux or GERD. Decreasing excess stomach acid can help relieve symptoms like heartburn, persistent cough, trouble sleeping and difficulty swallowing.

Nexium contraindications

* Nexium is contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or to substituted benzimidazoles.
* Nexium is also contraindicated with hypersensitivity to omeprazole, esomeprazole or other proton pump inhibitor.
* Symptomatic response to therapy with Nexium does not preclude the presence of gastric malignancy.
* Atrophic gastritis has been occasionally noted in gastric corpus biopsies from long-term treatment with omeprazole, of which Nexium is an enantiomer.
* As with all PPIs, people treated concomitantly with warfarin may need to be monitored for increases in INR and prothrombin time. Like other PPIs, Nexium may interfere with the absorption of drugs where gastric pH is an important determinant of bioavailability (digoxin, iron salts and ketoconazole).
* Combine use of Nexium and atazanavir or nelfinavir is not recommended because the plasma concentrations and therapeutic effects of those antiretroviral medications may be reduced.
* Nexium may increase the plasma levels of saquinavir if taken together. Reduction of saquinavir dose should be considered.
* Nexium should be used only for the conditions, dosages and durations specified by your doctor. Also dosing for adults and pediatric should be provided by your doctor.
* Use cautiously with pregnancy, lactation and hepatic dysfunction.

Nexium overdose and overdose treatment

Just like with all medications, it is possible for a patient who takes Nexium to overdose. The effects of a Nexium overdose will vary, depending on a number of factors, such as how much Nexium is taken. If an overdoses on Nexium occurs, the symptoms can vary. Symptoms of overdose may include: dry mouth, blurred vision, drowsiness, confusion, nausea, headache or increased heart rate (tachycardia).

Nexium overdose treatment: There is no treatment that can remove Nexium more quickly from the body system. If Nexium overdose occurs to you, treatment involves supportive care, which refers to treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. Seek medical attention immediately, if you happen to overdose on Nexium.
